There are 46(!) basic syllables in Japanese. It’s a whole lot more than the English alphabet.
The good news is, if you consider this a good news that is, just one of those 46 letters can be a word. For example,

ち (血)chi blood
て (手)te hand
は (歯)ha tooth/teeth
か (蚊)ka mosquito
き (木)ki tree
め (目)me eye/eyes
